Krav Maga: The Ultimate Self-Defence System
Krav Maga, Hebrew for "contact combat," is an extremely effective self-defence system. Initially developed for the Israeli Defence Forces, it's now refined for both military and civilian use. Krav Maga prepares you for real-life situations and is considered one of the most effective self-defence systems globally, used by military, law enforcement, and everyday people alike.
Origins and Development
- Roots in KAPAP: Originating from Krav Panim El Panim (KAPAP), the Hebrew acronym for face-to-face combat.
- Founded by Imrich "Imi" Lichtenfeld: Imi developed Krav Maga in response to rising fascist violence in the 1930s. His experiences led to a focus on quick threat neutralisation.
- Evolution in the Military: Imi joined the Czech Legion, fought in Libya, and was influenced by the British Fairbairn's combat system. In Palestine, he trained Haganah soldiers in various combat techniques.
Modern Adaptations
- Police and Civilian Training: Post-military, Imi adapted Krav Maga for civilian needs. The first course was held in 1971 at the Wingate Institute.
- Continued Improvement: Techniques from judo, aikido, and other martial arts were incorporated, enhancing the system.
Legacy of Imi Lichtenfeld: Imi's contributions to self-defence live on, allowing people to protect themselves and their loved ones, living by his motto: "So that one may walk in peace."
